While most people with Duckett's job might have consolidated their positions with alliances and advisers, Noseworthy says the CEO never learned the lay of the land in Alberta.

"He never surrounded himself with the kitchen cabinet of informal advisers with nothing to gain," Noseworthy says. "When he leaned back, there was nothing there."
